Geoff was asked to install and configure a switch with complex configurations that could handle network traffic for both their phones as well as their servers and computers. With the client switching from a traditional phone system to one using Voice Over IP (VoIP), the clients phones would now be sharing the Internet with PC and laptop users—a potential recipe for creating poor Internet performance for all devices on the network. With a proper setup—using VLANS (virtual local area network), he was able to properly route the traffic through the switch so that the phones—and the computers and servers—all could function with maximum Internet performance.
